We have a superb opportunity for a self-motivated and dedicated professional to join El Refugio del Burrito – a subsidiary of The Donkey Sanctuary, established in 2003 to improve conditions for donkeys and mules in Spain – as Senior Donkey Welfare Adviser. Fluent in both Spanish and English, and possessing proven leadership experience and practical equine knowledge, you will lead and support the Donkey Welfare team in Spain whilst representing El Refugio del Burrito and The Donkey Sanctuary as a professional in the field of equine welfare. You will act as a positive ambassador at all times, proactively growing and supporting a quality Rehoming, Direct Rehoming and Supported move Scheme and will provide a range of high quality training and learning interventions to raise the knowledge of the donkeys and mules, creating awareness about their welfare and their contribution to humans.

Within this varied role your principal duties will include –

  • Providing leadership to the Welfare team to efficiently and effectively achieve the agreed goals and objectives and support the implementation of the charity’s welfare strategy across the organisation
  • Working closely with the Donkey Welfare Advisers and monitoring the standards of service to maintain consistently high standards
  • Undertaking field work when necessary and in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders coordinating any actions to support donkeys identified as in need
  • Liaising with the Country Manager to ensure that the agreed objectives for donkey welfare are achieved in line with agreed strategy
  • Working with TDS UK to ensure the welfare teams’ knowledge and skills are regularly updated and developed in line with best practice and changes in animal welfare practice and legislation
  • Identifying main areas of concern regarding equine welfare in Spain and propose way to improve them, and liaising with local authorities on abandonment and mistreatment cases to ensure they comply with their responsibility to improve responsible ownership
  • Working with groups from all backgrounds to inform and educate, sharing best practice and delivering high quality, informative and impactful training to a number of audiences including donkey guardians and members of the public.

Proven management abilities, including successful management of a remote team and the issues that they face, together with a demonstrable understanding of equine behaviour and practical delivery of this in the field and knowledge of legal practicalities and application of relevant animal welfare legislation, is essential, as are excellent communication, negotiation, influencing and customer service skills, and the ability maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail whilst working with a number conflicting demands. Equine emergency rescue knowledge and the ability to prioritise and classify welfare cases and to delegate, organise and prioritise tasks to a team effectively when dealing with emergency work is desirable.

This is a full-time, 6 month maternity cover contract starting as soon as possible, working 40 hours a week.  Based in Spain, the post holder will be primarily working from home, but flexibility will be required for site working as required.
