The Donkey Sanctuary is an international animal welfare organisation, offering care and protection to donkeys and mules worldwide. We are working for a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering, and their contribution to humanity is fully valued. We are achieving this by transforming the quality of life for donkeys, mules and people worldwide through greater understanding, collaboration and support, and by promoting lasting, mutually life-enhancing relationships.

There are currently over 50 million donkeys and mules supporting the livelihoods of some of the poorest people on our planet. When donkeys and mules are well cared for, livelihoods, food production and access to clean water improve, as well as many other things that we often take for granted. In turn, we also ensure healthier, happier and more productive working animals.

The challenge of delivering better welfare on a global scale for millions of donkeys and mules is complex and ever changing. In order to affect change on a global scale we are looking to recruit a Policy and Research Manager who can help us face these challenges by researching the global advocacy environment and developing policies and policy positions that will help us to change the world for these magnificent animals and for the communities who rely on them.

This is a challenging yet rewarding opportunity, to help us deliver our goal, of a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering, and their contribution to humanity is fully valued.

As Policy and Research Manager, you will work with the Policy, Advocacy and Campaign teams and the wider charity to manage and further develop the organisation’s policies and policy processes, stakeholder management and advocacy-related research. You will have a good understanding of the UK, European and International external advocacy environments, and have the ability to assess trends and developments likely to affect policy. You will ensure that The Donkey Sanctuary has a strong voice in the policy making process at national and international level through the formulation of high quality, well informed policy positions and outputs on issues relevant to our stakeholders.

Possessing excellent written communication skills, and an ability to translate complex information into easy to understand messages, you will have extensive report writing experience, and will undertake research and write policy position papers, factsheets, publications and policy responses, and produce relevant policy and information briefs.

A good knowledge of the major stakeholders the charity must work and engage with, such as the UN, UNFAO, UNIFAD, OIE, the World Bank, the World Food Programme, and regionally in Africa, Asia/Pacific, Latin and South America and in Europe. Substantial post qualification experience of working in Policy, Advocacy or Campaigns sectors, is essential. Excellent communication, IT and organisational skills, with the ability to maintain a high degree of autonomy and attention to detail while working with a number conflicting demands and multiple deadlines is required.

If you feel you have the qualities, skills and experience to fulfil this varied, rewarding and vital role, and would like to be part of the evolving programme of change taking place within the charity, we would love to hear from you.

This position is based in Sidmouth, Devon – an area of outstanding natural beauty – however we are willing to consider home-working arrangements for the right candidate. The post will also require international travel. This is a full-time, permanent contract starting as soon as possible.

Closing date for completed applications: Monday 4 November 2019.

The Donkey Sanctuary is a Disability Confident Employer.

The Donkey Sanctuary is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable people (children and adults), and expects all staff and volunteers to undertake this commitment. Applicants will be subject to safer recruitment processes, including an application for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check where required for the post.
