The Donkey Sanctuary is an international animal welfare organisation, offering care and protection to donkeys and mules worldwide. We are working for a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering, and their contribution to humanity is fully valued. We are achieving this by transforming the quality of life for donkeys, mules and people worldwide through greater understanding, collaboration and support, and by promoting lasting, mutually life-enhancing relationships.

We now have a number of exciting opportunities for flexible and proactive individuals to join our 20+ strong Finance Department. As Assistant Management Accountant in either the Equine Operations and Resources area or the Income and Marketing Communications area (including commercial operations), you will provide support to cost centre managers, together with comprehensive analysis of income/expenditure and will be responsible for monthly accruals and prepayments. With strong communication, collaborative and interpersonal skills, you will ensure that strong relationships are developed and maintained with operational managers and their teams, improving the impact and understanding of financial reporting on charity performance and delivering insight that links financial reports to business strategies.

Within this multifunctional and rewarding role, your principal duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in the production of the monthly management accounts for your area, including accruals and prepayments, and writing variance commentary for dedicated cost centres.
  • Providing a finance business partnering service for your area giving advice and support as required to cost centre managers including training and coaching on all aspects of quarterly reforecasting and monthly reporting.
  • The collation and analysis of high volumes of complex data, interpreting trends and variances from budgets and forecasts with a view to providing timely and meaningful insight into monthly management accounts.
  • The provision of high-quality management accounting data, reports and advice to stakeholders across The Donkey Sanctuary, working with cost centre managers to understand variances against budget, and facilitating future reforecasting and the provision of meaningful variance commentary.
  • Management of the General Ledger and Project Ledger, ensuring data is accurate, up to date and consistent.

AAT or part qualified CIMA is preferred, although QBE will also  be considered. Experience in a management accounting/finance business partner role is essential, as is experience of a computerised accounting system, an advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications, particularly Excel, including some experience of dealing with high volumes of data. Knowledge of Open Accounts software, experience of budgeting and forecasting and experience of playing a key role in projects are desirable.

If you feel you have the qualifications, skills and experience to fulfil one of these varied and vital roles, and would like to be part of the evolving programme of change taking place within the charity, we would love to hear from you. Based in Sidmouth, Devon – an area of outstanding natural beauty – these are full-time, permanent contracts starting as soon as possible, although we will be happy to consider applications from those wishing to apply on a part-time basis (minimum 21 hours per week). Working principally from home, flexibility will be required for occasional onsite working, currently estimated to be 1-2 days per week.

Please note: a generous study support package including both cost and time elements will be offered.

Closing date for applications: Sunday 10 July 2022.

The Donkey Sanctuary is a Disability Confident Employer.

The Donkey Sanctuary is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable people (children and adults), and expects all staff and volunteers to undertake this commitment. Applicants will be subject to safer recruitment processes, including an application for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check where required for the post.

Please note: The Guaranteed interview scheme is only applicable to candidates who consider themselves to have a disability applying for roles based within the United Kingdom.
